The last time we saw The Courteeners they were rocking the Ibiza Rocks closing party in September in San Antonio. Fast forward to tonight and they’re playing on a typically cold and wet Manchester December evening. The weather might be rubbish, but there’s excitement in the air at Manchester Apollo. In the upstairs bar there’s iconic photos of the likes of Oasis and the Stone Roses playing gigs at the venue. The Courteeners are in good company. The anticipation is big after us seeing on social media videos of their latest gigs which are loud and bouncing.
Opening with ‘Are You In Love With A Notion?’ before playing the likes of ‘Acrylic’, ‘Kings Of The New Road’ and the excellent ‘Take Over The World’. Frontman Liam Fray then sang a few solos including the highly popular, ‘Smiths Disco’, before the band ended on anthems ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ and ‘What Took You So Long?’, with their infectious lyrics and melodies.
Every song tonight was a sing a long and there’s no doubt The Courteeners are one of the biggest bands in the country at the moment and a band on top of their game. Tonight’s gig was superb with anthemic tracks and their devoted following going bonkers to every single one.
