Aged 21 and having been DJing for just 3 years, Scottish DJ Hannah Laing’s incredible rise has seen her play the likes of legendry venues in the UK and Ibiza, as well as a recent DJ tour of New York City, whilst she’s been booked to play at the world famous Miami Winter Music Week this coming March. Having played on the same bill as the likes of Carl Cox, Nervo, Danny Howard, MK, Oliver Heldens as well as her tracks signed to 3 different labels, we sat down with Hannah to discuss her career so far.

Hi Hannah, how are you? Tell the readers of Uneek Ibiza about your style as a DJ.

Hello, I am really good thank you.  I would describe my style as a DJ as groovy and uplifting house.

How did you get into DJing?

From a young age I was brought up listening to the likes of Sasha, John Digweed, Graeme Park and Jeremy Healy.  My parents are massive house music fans who went to events regularly and still do.  I then started going to events around the world from a young age and following certain DJs.  I decided I wanted to DJ myself so I got my first set of decks when I was 18 and it was the best decision I have ever made.

Tell us about the first gigs you played?

6 months after getting my first set of decks, recording mixes, listening back and practicing almost everyday I got my first gig.  It was in a bar called The Westport bar in a small town not far from where I live.  I will never forget those overwhelming feelings standing up there playing out to all my friends/family.  My second gig was in another bar in my home City Dundee. I played an event called Dundee dance event.  It happens on the first Sunday of May every year and there’s over 200 DJs and over 15 bars involved, it was amazing!

You then moved on to playing gigs in Ibiza, where did you play and how did the sets go?

My first gig in Ibiza was in the upstairs house lounge of The Highlander Scottish bar where I then became their resident DJ.

Playing in Ibiza is different experience altogether, I couldn’t believe it was happening.  Spending the summer in Ibiza was literally the best experience of my life.  I was lucky enough to have 3 residencies – The Highlander, Technoboat and Eden on Saturdays with Detroit. My time in Ibiza has seen me play Ocean Beach Club, Sankeys and Hush for Craft Underground, Eden for Detroit, Technoboat, Highlander, Jet pool party, Bora Bora beach and various places on the crazy west end!

Sounds like a great summer! What were your biggest tracks in your Ibiza sets?

My biggest tracks of the summer would have to be Darius Syrossian – All Night Long, Filthy Rich – Rendezvous (Nathan Barato remix), Sweet Female Attitude – Flowers (Sam Divine & Cutris Gabriel remix) and DJ Deeon – Freak like me.

Playing these tracks in my set always created a special vibe that I will never forget.

Some great tracks there! What was your first time like on the island?

My first time on the island was just under 3 years ago, I was 18 and it was magical.  I had the best week of my life partying with friends and meeting new people.  I had heard and researched loads about the island but until you are there experiencing it first hand you don’t understand.  The atmosphere, the people, the music and of course the beautiful island itself is unbeatable.

Couldn’t agree more! Tell us about the craziest nights out you’ve had in Ibiza!

I have had many crazy nights in Ibiza (some I wont mention in this interview haha!)

The craziest night was probably attending a villa party after I had finished a DJ set in the Highlander. We had to meet at the bus station at 6am so my friends and I got on a bus which took us up to the hills.  When we go off the bus at the villa we were told to be quiet until we got inside so we all sneaked off inside. When we got inside it was incredible there was a bar and DJs playing.  We met loads of new people and partied there until 2pm when the bus come back to collect us.  It was like something from a film, I’ll never forget it.

Villa parties in Ibiza are indeed great! What are your favourite parts of the island?

My favourite parts of the Island to relax would have to be Cala Gracio beach as it is such a beautiful beach, there’s a DJ playing and the water is so blue!  I also love Bora Bora beach especially on Sundays. Thousands of people dancing on a beach to the best music. You just can’t beat it.

They’re favourites of ours also! You’ve been signed to 3 different record labels, tell us about Hannah Laing the producer, what kind of tracks can we expect from you?

After DJing for just over a year I decided I wanted to learn how to make my own music.  I played keyboard at a young age so I decided this was definitley for me.  I did various courses on production and began making some tracks.  Producing is a long process and I am still learning every day.  The kind of tracks to expect from me at the moment would be funky house.  Expect some releases this year.

We shall look forward to them. From DJing in Ibiza, you toured New York recently, tell us all about that!

In Novemeber I was lucky enough to get booked to play 4 gigs over 7 days.  I played bars and after hours parties in Brooklyn, New York City and New Jersey.  DJing in New York is a completely different experience compared to DJing in Europe.  The whole atmosphere and vibe was different, the crowd were proper music lovers and totally into it.  It was amazing!

That must of been a great experience. And from New York to Miami, you’ve been booked to play at the world famous Miami Winter Music Week! Bet you can’t wait!

I am still in shock that I have been booked to play in Miami, It doesn’t feel real.  Miami is somewhere I have always dreamed of going on holiday never mind getting the opportunity to DJ there.  So far I will be playing 3 bars, a club and a pool party.  Excited is an understatement.

Brilliant! Will you be back to Ibiza this coming summer?

Yeah I am going back to Ibiza this year for sure, this will be my third season. I can’t get away from the place, it makes me so happy. I am looking forward to what this summer will bring.

Where we can we catch you between now and Miami/Ibiza?

So far I will be playing in Belfast and various venues around Scotland, mainly Glasgow.  I have an exciting meeting this month which could mean DJing in a lot more places. I can’t wait to find out what is going to happen.

Great, good luck with everything and thanks for the interview Hannah!

Cool, thanks!
