We hopped on the 2:30am DiscoBus from San Antonio to make the short journey to San Rafael for Cocoon’s closing fiesta at Amnesia. Now in its 20th year on the island, Cocoon is the original Ibiza techno night. It’s been quite a journey, from four one off parties in 1999 to becoming one of the biggest nights the island has ever seen.

This summer has seen Cocoon bring acts like Kraftwerk, Richie Hawtin and Underworld to the White Isle.

Tonight’s closing party features a strong line-up. Adam Beyer and Anna play in the Main Room. Sven Väth and Peggy Gou are on the terrace. We push through the teeming mass of people on the terrace to get a closer view of the DJ box.

It’s safe to say that Peggy Gou is one of the hottest acts on the planet at the moment. Peggy’s set is full of bangers, like her own Starry Night, Laurent Garnier’s Feel Good and Schatrax’s Humbug. Her sound is summery, tropical and sexy.

At 4am, Cocoon head honcho Sven Väth takes over the controls on the terrace. He ups the ante, moving into peak time Techno territory. The energy in the room becomes more intense. Stand out tracks include Sven’s classic The Beauty and The Beast.

The Main Room is equally busy for Drumcode’s Adam Beyer. It’s pounding, relentless Techno with balls. Breakdowns and peaks are accompanied by Amnesia’s legendary ice cannon.

Cocoon’s motto for the summer is Dancin since ’99. It’s easy to see why they have retained longevity on an island that evolves and changes constantly. Their focus has always been on purveying quality underground music. They don’t care about VIP culture. They love the music. Which is why we love Cocoon. Long may it continue.
